A ranked guide to the most enjoyable builds in CoH: Homecoming, sorted by archetype. Fun is measured across three axes: moment-to-moment decision richness, visible power expression, and recovery texture (how forgiving failure feels).


Brute

Role: melee DPS / tank hybrid

1. Fire Farmer — Spines / Fiery Aura

Fun rating: 95/100 Tags: AoE nuke self-sustain AE farming

Spine Burst + Burn + Fire Shield passives. Perma-Rage Fury farming loops feel genuinely cathartic. The definitive farm build and one of the tightest action-reward cycles in any MMO.

2. AoE Blender — Rad Melee / Bio Armor

Fun rating: 90/100 Tags: DoT stacking debuff aura team synergy

Contaminated Strike chains + Bio's Offensive Adaptation mode. Enemies die in a green glow radius you barely notice. Bio's absorb mechanic is uniquely engaging among armor sets.

3. Unkillable Brawler — Super Strength / Willpower

Fun rating: 88/100 Tags: Rage crash recovery solo-friendly street-level

Rage + Knockout Blow is the most satisfying single hit in the game. Willpower's passive recovery means you almost never die, which means you almost never have to think defensively.


Scrapper

Role: melee DPS / self-reliant

1. Crit Machine — Street Justice / Regeneration

Fun rating: 87/100 Tags: combo system crit fishing high skill cap

Combo finishers reward timing. Regen's active heal loop keeps pressure high. The skill expression is unusually high for a Scrapper — this one rewards practice.

2. Psi Horror — Psionic Melee / Shield Defense

Fun rating: 85/100 Tags: niche damage type Shield Charge AoE thematic

Psi has unique positional advantage vs high-defense enemies. Shield Charge's room-crossing AoE is one of the most fun movement abilities in the game.

3. Dark Arts Duelist — Dark Melee / Dark Armor

Fun rating: 82/100 Tags: toggle-heavy fear effects dramatic visuals

Soul Drain + Midnight Grasp. The all-dark aesthetic is unmatched. Cloak of Fear softens mob density enough to feel like a horror movie protagonist.


Tanker

Role: melee defense / aggro anchor

1. AoE Taunter — Bio Armor / Rad Melee

Fun rating: 89/100 Tags: offensive tank aura debuffs self-sustain

Tankers get wider AoE than Brutes on their attacks. Bio's absorb mechanic is uniquely engaging, and Offensive Adaptation mode lets you play offensively without sacrificing survivability.

2. Immortal Aggro Sponge — Invulnerability / Super Strength

Fun rating: 84/100 Tags: classic fantasy near-unkillable high Taunt radius

The Superman archetype. Invuln at the high def cap + SS Rage gives you the classic hero feel. Teammates feel genuinely safe behind you — which is its own kind of fun.

3. Fire Fortress — Fiery Aura / Ice Melee

Fun rating: 80/100 Tags: passive damage aura slow field thematic contrast

Fire/Ice contrast is visually compelling. Combustion + Ice patch creates a control zone where mobs suffer quietly. Lower excitement ceiling but the passive damage aura never stops working.


Stalker

Role: melee DPS / ambush

1. One-Shot Assassin — Savage Melee / Ninjitsu

Fun rating: 91/100 Tags: burst nuke hidden AS crits mobile

Bleeding DoTs + Assassin Strike crit from Placate. Ninjitsu's low toggle count means you spend resources on offense rather than survival. Melts AVs cleanly.

2. Psi Ghost — Psionic Melee / Energy Aura

Fun rating: 85/100 Tags: Insight mechanic proc-heavy endurance efficient

Insight gives Psi a home here — Assassin Strike from Insight hits unresisted. Energy Aura has excellent endurance tools to sustain the combo loop.


Blaster

Role: ranged DPS

1. Nuke Happy — Fire Blast / Fire Manipulation

Fun rating: 94/100 Tags: Rain of Fire perma-nuke AoE dominant

Inferno + Hot Feet + Rain of Fire = everything dies. Fire/Fire is the gold standard for blapping when you just want to delete spawns. The definitive Blaster experience.

2. Storm Artillery — Water Blast / Stormy Sentinel

Fun rating: 88/100 Tags: knockback control team disruption cinematic

Geyser + Whirlpool creates a CC corridor. Stormy's Lightning Storm is a deployable pet nuke. Visually one of the most spectacular builds in the game.

3. Tactical Gadgeteer — Beam Rifle / Devices

Fun rating: 83/100 Tags: debuff stacking set-up playstyle high APM

Overcharge + Time Bomb setup rewards pre-planning. The highest skill-expression Blaster. Not for everyone but deeply satisfying when the setup pays off.


Defender

Role: support / ranged DPS hybrid

1. Team Carry — Kinetics / Radiation Blast

Fun rating: 92/100 Tags: Fulcrum Shift speed boost team multiplier

Fulcrum Shift is the single highest-impact team power in the game. Every spawn turns into a highlight reel. Rad Blast pairs perfectly for personal damage output. Note: this is a 10/10 for team fun and a 7/10 for solo fun.

2. Debuff Engine — Traps / Dark Blast

Fun rating: 86/100 Tags: forcefields set-and-forget safe playstyle

Poison Trap + Force Field Generator lets you play ambient and safely. Dark Blast's -ToHit stacking means mobs effectively go blind before they reach you.


Controller

Role: crowd control / team support

1. Fire Lord — Fire Control / Kinetics

Fun rating: 96/100 Tags: imps pet army Flashfire AoE team Fulcrum

Fire Imps are persistent mobile damage pets. Cinders AoE hold + Fulcrum Shift turns a Controller into a DPS powerhouse. Many players argue this has the highest fun ceiling in the entire game.

2. Gravity Puzzler — Gravity / Time Manipulation

Fun rating: 84/100 Tags: Singularity pet wormhole time distort

Wormhole + Singularity is a chaotic, hilarious toolkit. Time Manipulation adds distortion fields. The weirdest playstyle in the game and the most creative.


Corruptor

Role: ranged DPS / debuff

1. Viral Menace — Rad Blast / Rad Emission

Fun rating: 90/100 Tags: Lingering Radiation debuff stacking Scourge crits

Double Rad is the most potent debuff stack available to a single character. Scourge triggers bonus crits on low-HP enemies. Works equally well solo or as a team carry.

2. Cold Sniper — Ice Blast / Cold Domination

Fun rating: 85/100 Tags: slow fields Heat Loss team def buffs

Heat Loss is a Defender-grade team power that Corruptors rarely get. Sleet + Ice Blast delivers layered debuffs at long range. Surgical and methodical.


Mastermind

Role: pet army / tactical command

1. Dark Lord — Demons / Dark Miasma

Fun rating: 93/100 Tags: Prince pet Tar Patch team stealth denial

Tar Patch + Twilight Grasp + Demon Prince is a juggernaut trio. Dark Servant is a pseudo-pet that heals, debuffs, and fears simultaneously — effectively a seventh party member.

2. Death Brigade — Necromancy / Dark Miasma

Fun rating: 91/100 Tags: Lich pet perma-undead thematic peak

Soul Extraction on corpses, a Lich boss pet, and Darkest Night means your army never stops growing. Atmospherically CoH at its darkest.

3. Robot Commander — Robotics / Traps

Fun rating: 87/100 Tags: force field bots safe playstyle high floor

Bots self-buff with their own shields. Traps makes the team nearly untouchable. Lower excitement ceiling but virtually zero frustration — the most reliable Mastermind.


Dominator

Role: crowd control / heavy melee

1. Perma-Dom Machine — Fire Control / Fire Assault

Fun rating: 95/100 Tags: perma-domination Fire Imps nova mode

The Fire/Fire Dom is a Controller who also has a Blaster's Inferno. Perma-Domination nearly doubles damage. Fire Imps add sustained pet DPS. The combination is genuinely absurd in the best way.

2. Ice Tyrant — Ice Control / Psionic Assault

Fun rating: 87/100 Tags: slow fields Glacier psi unresisted

Glacier is a room-wide hold. Psi Assault exploits held enemies who often have minimal psi resistance. Surgical and methodical — deeply satisfying for patient players.
