Raymond E. Feist has a new book coming. That's it. That's the post.
Well, almost. The title is A Light Between the Heavens — subject to change, per Feist's own disclaimer, because apparently titles are slippery things right up until publication. There's no synopsis, no release date, no confirmation of setting. Given his last few decades of output, it's a fair bet we're still somewhere in or around Midkemia, but that's inference, not information.
What we do have is Feist's explanation of how the title showed up. He says titles either announce themselves immediately or hide until he stumbles into the scene that makes them obvious. Case in point: Magician wasn't the original title of the first Riftwar book. The working title was Riftwar, and an editor told him that sounded too science-fiction for a fantasy novel. So he said "Magician" on the spot. Forty-plus years and a small publishing empire later, it's safe to say the editor was onto something.
For this one, he says he was writing without a title for a while, and the title arrived when he found himself anticipating a scene he hadn't written yet — which is a very writer thing to say, and also a reminder that even a guy with this much shelf space still works the way the rest of us do: forward, mostly blind, hoping the destination clarifies itself before you get there.
So: no plot, no cover, no date. Just a title, and a small window into how one very productive fantasy author still builds a book one uncertain step at a time. I'll take it.
